The battle of marathon
The battle of Marathon is one of the most important battles in Greek history. It is also the earliest of recorded battles. The persians were angry at the greeks because of the Ionians revolting against the rule of the persians. Their mission was to crush the greek states. Armed with approximately 20,000 infantry, they docked just north of Athens. Athens released 10,000 hoplites to defend their country. They met on the plains of Marathon and began to fight. after a long battle, the Athens win. Pheidippides, an Atheneian soldier, ran 42.195 kilometres to Athens to say, "we won the war!"
