Athenian Women
The life of an Athenian women was not a very good one. All of their life they are controlled by a man. They are in their father's control until they are married off. Then they are controlled by a spouse. The marriages were arranged, in the girls teens usually to an older man, by the father and it was very important for the woman to be a virgin. When a women is married off, there is a ceremony called Gamos. This is very similiar to marriage today, altough it symbolizes the passing from father to spouse. The woman is cleaned and dressed up and she sacrifices all of her childhood toys and games to the goddess Artemis. The women usually learned to read at home or at school. They learned many household skills and some mythology. After their gamos, they rarely left the house, except for religious occasions.
